Atletico Madrid were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw in their opening La Liga Fixture against Valencia at the Estadio De Mestalla. Diego Simeone’s men were coming fresh off an impressive 4-2 win against arch-rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup but couldn’t bring the same intensity and fight to this game. Goals from Atleti’s Angel Correa and Valencia’s Rodrigo Moreno wrapped up the night.

Angel Correa opened the scoring in the 26th Minute when Antoine Griezmann split Valencia’s defence with a scintillating pass to find Correa who scored on the turn to put Atletico Madrid in front. Atletico Madrid were expected to challenge for the La Liga Title this Season especially after their brilliant Transfer Window and the fact that they could tie World Champion Antoine Griezmann down to a new contract. Griezmann was lively against Valencia but may take a game or two to hit his absolute best, but the Frenchman put in a good shift for Atleti and finished with an assist to mark his 31st Direct involvement in Goals (22 Goals and nine assists) in 31 games for the Los rojiblancos

Valencia had a few opportunities in the first half courtesy New Signing Daniel Wass and Frontman Rodrigo Moreno. Valencia went into the break trailing 1-0 but 11 minutes after resumption found the back of the net. Geoffrey Kondogbia’s looping ball was taken brilliantly by Daniel Wass who passed the ball crossfield to find Rodrigo who controlled the ball with his chest and then blasted it past Jan Oblak. Wass looked threatening from the get-go, the Danish Internation had been a mainstay at Celta Vigo and looked very well settled in Valencia, the Dane could even have scored the winner if it wasn’t for Jan Oblak’s goalkeeping prowess.
Atletico Madrid will be looking to make up for lost ground after Title rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona got off to winning starts. Atelti goes up against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday and Valencia travel to Espanyol on Sunday.
