England and Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney is to make a special farewell appearance for the Three Lions as they take on the US in a friendly.
It has been nearly two years since England’s all-time leading scorer Wayne Rooney put on the three lions shirt. But the English legend is all set to come out of retirement to play for his country one last time in a match against the US that is to be his farewell this month, announced the Football Association earlier this week. This would give the fans to appreciate and bid a proper farewell to a man who has been an excellent servant for his club and country for many years.

One Last Hurray
Rooney announced his retirement from international football in 2017, but the 33-year-old forward was not given a proper send off. Prior to that, he had scored 53 goals from 119 appearances for the three lions – the most by an outfield player. More than the goals and the laurels, he is responsible for numerous memories that will be etched in the minds of every English fan. They will be treated to watching their hero one more time as he dawns the three lions shirt at Wembley on the 15th of November. The match will be called The Wayne Rooney Foundation International in support of the Englishman’s charity supporting disadvantaged kids, with Gareth Southgate naming him in his squad. Wayne Rooney expressed his excitement to play for his country again in a statement released by the FA that termed it his “Final England appearance”.
A Fitting opponent
Wayne Rooney’s final game will be played against the US – where Rooney plays his trade now at the end of his career. He plays for DC United and signed for them at the end of last year’s English season after a short stint with his boyhood club Everton. Since he has played for them in the MLS, he scored 12 goals and has made many outstanding performances to help them make the playoffs. Although they lost the playoff game 3 – 2 in the penalty shootout to Columbus Crew, Rooney has almost single-handedly got them into the playoff and is also nominated for the MVP of the season in this year’s MLS.
As English football bids farewell to yet another Legend, an English fan could only thank the great man for all his contributions to the beautiful game and hope the country will see the career’s of many more talented youngsters flourish like that of Wayne Rooney.
