West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini explained why Perez was angry on the bench after he was snubbed to replace Arnautovic during the game against Everton. Perez was asked to warm up as it looked like he was set to replace the Austrian when he looked to be injured towards the end of the game against Everton but was overlooked for Michail Antonio. He was pictured having a deep conversation with goalkeeping coach and seemed to be evidently upset about being an unused substitute during the game. But Pellegrini explained his decision later during his post-match press conference.

He said: “When Marko was injured, I called Lucas because he was doing a warm-up, and when I saw he was sat on the bench and Antonio was working and ready, that’s why I brought him on instead, rather than waiting for Lucas to warm up again. Antonio was ready, and Lucas had to warm up a little bit more.” It was a perfect birthday present for the West Ham manager as his team secured their first points in the Premier League and moved to 16th place on the table. Pellegrini said that he was desperate to get the first points on the board and put their dreadful start to their season behind and get the points he believed his team’s performances deserved.

He also said that West Ham have been very unlucky the in last three games as he believes that they didn’t deserve to win the games but did not deserve to loose them either. He says that often happens that after a string of losses one thinks that things aren’t being done the right way but they stuck to their ideology and looked to score goals from the first kick of the game and continued to do so until the last. He also believes that his players will only get better because they haven’t been able to replicate the hard work and performance they put in during training and says they are close to reciprocating it on the field.
