White Ferns’ cricketer Katie Perkins was dismissed in an unbelievable way in their match against Australia Governor-General’s XI. She was caught after the ball was hit her partner, Katey Martin’s bat which left everyone in shock.
White Ferns have toured to Australia for their three-match ODI series where they were playing a game against Australia Governor-General’s XI on Thursday in Sydney. The shocking incident happened during the New Zealand innings.
Put into bat first, White Ferns put up a huge total of 323. Suzies Bates did welcome the bowler with a boundary and scored a 74-runs partnership with Lauren Down. However, Bates got dismissed to Faltum for 43. Maddy Green joined her immediately afterward and they reduced to 103 for 2. Her dismissal brought Martin on the crease. She, along with Down made a stable 163 runs partnership.
After completing her century which included 13 boundaries, Down got dismissed to McGrath. However, Martin scored 76 before she got out and they lost two wickets of Satterthwaite and Perkins in quick succession. Meanwhile, in the 45th over, the bizarre incident took place.
Perkins hit Heather Graham’s over-pitched delivery straight down the crease and it touched her partner Katey Martin at the non-striker’s end. Martin tried to get out of the way but the ball hit her bat and went up straight into the hands of the bowler who took an easy catch. The unimaginable way of dismissal left everyone in shock.
The commentators too were surprised. Fox Cricket commentator and former Australia cricketer Mel Jones compared that with a miracle.
“This looks like it could be an absolute miracle,” Jones added. “Have you ever seen anything like this?”
Former New Zealand born Australian cricketer Brendon Julian was equally surprised with the dismissal.
“Is that out? It looked out? I think that’s out,” added Julian.
Martin, however, anchored the innings till the end, smashed 72 runs and guided White Ferns to put up a decent competitive total of 323 for 7 in their 50 overs.
In reply, Australia Governor-General’s XI were bowled out for a mere total. Former Australia player and Governor-General’s captain Alex Blackwell scored 28 but couldn’t play long as she was dismissed by Hannah Rowe. Anna Peterson picked up 3 wickets for New Zealand and restricted their opponent within 157 with nearly 10 overs to spare and White Ferns won the game by 166 runs.
